WHO IS CHEF JIM TORGESON ("TORGY")

With the ending of the Lemon Festival, where do we go from
here?

The reason for this blog is not just about cooking, but the adventure of cooking and the things
that revolve around it. From safe food handling, knives, shopping, gardening, creating amazing
dishes to meals for family and friends.

This friends, is the adventure and antics of Chef Torgy.

Jim started his journey in cooking in the mid 1980’s. He discovered he had a passion & gift for
the culinary arts and loved improving and creating recipes.

(In the beginning) We had a Weber Kettle BBQ at home and Jim began experimenting with
it. He mastered the Weber and wanted to learn the technique of smoking. He bought his first
little smoker from Home Depot (Char-Broil Smokers). Thus Jim wore out two Weber
BBQ's, a Ducane BBQ and two Home Depot Smokers.

Jim became a legend in his own mind with his BBQ’ing & smoking.

Jim learned his love of cooking from his mother Lorraine. She was not what you call a gourmet
cook, but she sure knew her way around a kitchen and produced some wonderful dishes & meals.
In the mid 1990’s Jim started studying Julia Childs' books to learn new techniques. In 1999, Jim’s mother
encouraged him to go to Culinary School. Boy, was that was a reality check for Jim for he
considered himself an expert in cooking and BBQ’ing. What Jim found out was just how much
he  DID NOT know!

And with this, the Adventures of Chef Torgy begins.  So stay tuned as we wind down this path with Chef Torgy.

We plan to TRY posting weekly, so be sure to sign up for email notifications!

SUNDAY - DAY 2

This was the best year Living Faith Church has had at the Lemon Festival!  We had beautiful weather and the people came out.   We had "many hands" helping Sunday.  Rechelle brought out her Jr. High Sunday school class to help in the morning and the kids did an awesome job.  Mervin and family have always been my Sunday morning crew, thanks guys, don't know what I would do without you!  Then a bunch showed up after 12 - to many to count!

The day flew by, as orders were taken and mouth watering Tri-Tip and Pulled Pork sandwiches were passed thru the windows.  Our slow smoked corn on the cob and freshly made coleslaw are also a big hit.

The excitement was contagious, there was good entertainment, good food and outstanding music

So, as always, all good things must come to an end (thank heavens!).  Our tear down went quickly, we said our good byes to old and new friends we met at the  park and we look forward to the Lemon Festival in 2012.

Many thanks to all who helped.

I personally want to say thank you to Evelyn, Keith & Jared - without your help, we could never pull this off!

Here are a few more pictures of the Festival.

                                            SEE YOU ALL  IN 2012!

Lemon Festival - Opening Day!

WOW! What a day we had! It was non stop.  We even had people waiting in line BEFORE we officially opented for business (10 am).  That has never happened before. It did not seem to let up at all till around 4:30.  Totally amazing.

The guys had their "Guys all night out" on Friday night.  They cooked the pork to perfection (10+ hrs).  They cook almost 200 lbs. of Tri Tip.  Had to make a Costco run at 4 pm to buy tomorrows Tri Tip.  Everyone worked really hard.  The cook team never stopped.

The guys out at the BBQ had a tough job keeping up with us in the booth.  Jim (Chef Torgy), Keith & Jared are the anchors. Michael & Johnathan did what ever was necessary to help. Barbara, Veria, Kyleen, Pastor Mike, Martha, Karin, Ragesh, Savita, & DR were my troopers inside the booth .  Evelyn & Richard were my clean up angles.  It takes many hands to make this event work  (I wish we had a few more!)  I know I have forgotten a name or two, I am tired right now and I am having a hard time remembering everyone who worked today.

Nothing beats the joy of serving GOOD food to the public.

Here are a few picutres of our day.  I was SOOO busy, I only took a few pictures.

The 20th Annual California Lemon Festival

The truck is loaded, the BBQ is ready and we are off for the 20th Annual California Lemon Festival, at Girsh Park, Goleta CA.

We set up Friday - They put us in the grass this year - it will be interesting.  Pictures to follow.

The fun begins on Friday night with the "Men's All Night Out".  Cooking starts at 9 PM with Manly Men and Monkey Grunts.

For Chef Torgy, this is his 6th year and for Living Faith Center it is their 5th year working with the "Great One".

See you there!
